    Almost all large companies deal with CSR activities: it has a CSR policy, employs CSR staff, conducts activities that have a positive effect on the environment and society, and presents CSR reports.

    However, in the process of developing CSR, new challenges arose. Twenty years ago, the biggest problem was the gross neglect of CSR. Today, it is the failure of these practices to succeed in effecting change. Why do some companies seemingly adopt CSR in ways that impact the environment and society positively and many more seem not to? Our study finds that experimentation plays an important role for effective CSR. This has implications for firms that implement CSR as well as for firms that watch from the outside, such as sustainable investors and ESG rating agencies. For a newly published study, we examine how four multinational companies implemented CSR. To that end, we interviewed 81 managers from all levels in the companies, from local managers of sustainability to CEOs. In addition to that, the CSR report of the companies and public documentations on how external stakeholders evaluate the CSR practice of the companies were used as a basis for analysis.

     

    All four firms implemented CSR but two of the corporations indeed achieved their prespecified CSR goals whereas the other two firms did not. Analysis brought it to our notice that experimentation could explain such diverging outcomes. Under CSR, experimentation thus simply means that companies not only produced knowledge about the local effects of their CSR practices but also utilized such knowledge to adapt their CSR practices on an ongoing basis with the intent of fulfilling the objectives of their CSR efforts. An example would be a mining firm that organized an HIV/AIDS program, which is understood to be the CSR practice for the creation of health benefits for local communities-a CSR goal.

    This CSR initiative was so successful because the company engaged in an ongoing and proactive dialogue with communities, including regular community consultation forums in which, as one manager told us, “people in our surrounding communities can bring issues to the table.” The company drew on this knowledge of local conditions to adapt CSR practices to the circumstances. On the contrary, at companies that failed to achieve the expected CSR outcomes, consistency, rather than experimentation, was the essence of its approach to CSR. In such companies, the pressure was put on standardizing CSR initiatives according to the perceived best practices amongst senior managers. There was no feedback loop — knowledge produced on the ground with the CSR initiatives did not bubble up to the managers funding and overseeing the initiatives, and the staff on the ground had little leeway to adapt CSR practices to local conditions.

    Challenges & Outlook: A Da Milano faces market competition, changing consumer preferences, and fluctuations in the economy. As markets continue evolving in response to technological advancement and societal change, it is crucial to understand and act on changes in consumer trends and preferences. Failure to adapt fast will result in loss of market share and relevance for such businesses.

    Going forward into the future, there are various ways Da Milano may expand operations, diversify its products, and innovate digitally.

    Da Milano currently boasts over 60 company-owned stores in 17 cities in India and abroad, besides showrooms at 23 airport stores in the country.

    On the cutting edge of retail innovation, the brand continually integrates technology into its stores to revolutionize operations.

    Its EPOS machines, totally integrated with digital mediums, have drastically cut down billing time, ensuring swift and efficient transactions.

    Introduction of footfall counting machines streamline the whole process in terms of ideal layout and resource utilization by the store, which ultimately results in giving the customer an overall better experience. The brand really cares for the feedback of its customers.

    The process was always streamlined using scanners and QR codes, while issues were addressed in specific time allocations.

     Design Reasoning: Environmentally friendly and sustainable – two pillars of the brand store design will ensure that a significant percentage of its building materials and furniture in its stores come from refurbished, reused, reclaimed, or recycled materials. Thus, it would, at least, occupy 20 percent of all its construction material and furniture, making way for reduced waste and showing emphasis to reduce the ecological footprint.
